Occupational therapists
The occupational therapists make a tremendous difference to the lives of people with disabilities. From stroke patients to children with cerebral palsy, they’re improving their quality of life in the hospital and through community outreach. An example of the creative care they offer and how it makes a difference is the Hope Therapy programme. Click the link for details. Helena Fine
Occupational Therapist Helena studied at Stellenbosch and did her community service here in 2015, but the lack of posts thereafter forced her to the big city. After nearly two years at Baragwanath Hospital she returned in December 2017. Having grown up in a small town, her passion is for rural health and wants to be part of bringing lasting change to communities. As such, her interests are broad - from home visits to meet people where they're at, to the technical side of managing hand injuries. Away from work she enjoys hiking, cycling, or reading a good book. She's married to Nick, one of the doctors, who she met at Zithulele! |
Adele Snyman
Occupational Therapist Adele graduated from the Free State and worked here for two and a half years, starting with comm serv, from 2015 to 2017. Now she's back, since mid-2019, with some experience of a big city rehab centre and nearly finished with a Masters in OT in neurology. She enjoys the variety of patients and conditions one sees as a rural OT, but has a particular interest in neuro and spinal cord conditions. She also enjoys hiking and travelling - exploring the beautiful world we live in. She's married to Andre, who works for Philani, an NGO partner and has one beautiful little boy. |
Anien van Staden
Occupational Therapist Anien rounds out the OTs-who-couldn't-leave :) She's a UWC graduate, who joined us for comm serv in 2018 and waited patiently for a vacant post in 2019. She has a special interest in the rehab of burns and stroke patients, but is also a registered dental assistant and has a passion for wound dressings! Her hobbies are hiking, reading, swimming and sewing. |
Bernelee Maschaka
Occupational Therapist Bernelee is a Stellenbosch graduate; she joins us for community service this year. Broadly, she's interested in rural and community health and finding ways to bring positive, sustainable change. Within OT, her specific interests are paediatrics and neurology. What else does she enjoy? "I love music, whether it be listening to a good tune or playing the piano or flute. I also thoroughly enjoy getting wrapped up in a good book." |
