FAMILY MEDICINE REGISTRARS
From February 2017 we enter a new, exciting era at Zithulele - training Family Medicine specialists as a satellite campus of Walter Sisulu University.
Dr Nick Fine
Nick is a Wits graduate who joined us for community service in 2015 after an internship at Baragwanath and couldn't tear himself away. He is interested in primary care, HIV and pain management and has a diploma in palliative medicine. He was one of our first Fam Med registrars, starting in 2017. He enjoys cricket and soccer, socialising and exploring new things. (And good wine.) Having always lived in a city until now, he is a convert to the joys of rural living. |
Dr Philippa Scotcher
Squiggy (her ID says Philippa, but her real name is Squiggy), is a Stellenbosch graduate who did her internship in Pietermaritzburg and community service here in 2016. She was the 9th doctor to come back to Zithulele after a student elective and one of our first two Fam Med registrars! Her interests are a good fit for our context: rural healthcare, HIV medicine, primary health care and health systems . Outside of work she enjoys meeting new people, be it hiking, trail running, travelling or just in a good book. |
Dr Pierre-Andre Mans
Pierre-Andre studied at Stellenbosch and did his internship in George. He's a long term Zithulelean, having done his community service year here in 2011 and never left. His interests range widely – his passion is ultrasound (he has a post-grad diploma in it), but he also enjoys things from surgery or stumbling across rare diseases. This makes him an ideal candidate to be a Family Physician and he started the reg programme in 2019, which is why he's now under this tab! When he's not working, he has a busy family life: he has seven kids, but still finds time to enjoy cooking with his wife, gardening and exploring the nearby beaches. |
Dr Anele Mhlakaza
Anele joined us for community service, stayed on, and has now joined the reg programme. He's a Walter Sisulu graduate who did his internship at the famous Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital. Unassuming, yet with a way of engaging deeply with patients and staff alike, he has wide-ranging interests which he's looking forward to developing as he works towards becoming a specialist. Outside of health, his interests are poetry, anime and watching YouTube videos on platypuses. |
